Misamis Occidental's Pride "CITY OF OROQUIETA"

OROQUIETA CITY

Layawan was the oldest name of Oroquieta, which was the barrio in the province of Misamis since 1861 until 1879. The early settlers then of the barrio were Boholano peddlers. They found so many stray animals along the river, thus they named the place Layawan, which means a place of stray animals. A little later, Misamis was divided into two provinces, Misamis Occidental and Oriental. Then in 1880, Layawan changed its name into Oroquieta when it became a town. Some sources revealed that the town got its name from a famous barrio in Spain where Father Toas Tomas Casado, the first parish priest here and General Domingo Mariones y Murillo, a hero in the battle of Oroquieta, were born.

Another version is that Oroquieta had derived its name from the word ‘ORO’ and ‘KITA’. The early inhabitants then had found gold along the river. Thus, the name ‘ORO’ which means Gold and ‘QUITA’ or ‘KITA’ which means to find.

Layawan river

Many years had passed; Oroquieta progressed by leaps and bounces until finally it became the capital town (cabecera) on January 6, 1930. As capital town, people of various neighboring provinces came and inhabited in the place where they earn their living through fishing, farming, merchandising and other forms of businesses. Soon afterwards its income increased simultaneously with increase in population.

It is worthy to note that sometime in 1942, Oroquieta was made the capital of the free Philippines by the guerillas. (Personal interview with the late Atty. Vicente Blanco, Municipal Mayor during the Japanese Occupation)

It must be remembered that during this time the late President Manuel L. Quezon together with the late Sergio OsmeƱa, Sr., a bodyguard and Major Manuel Nieto, Sr. landed in Oroquieta after their evacuation from Corregidor to Australia.

The seat of government of the Free Philippines then was the Capitol. The Free Philippine Government was then issuing Misamis Occidental emergency notes. Late President Quezon, upon knowing that Oroquieta was made a capital of the Free Philippines and that the town was issuing emergency notes, authorized the Printing of the Mindanao emergency note.

Another noteworthy incident during the Japanese occupation was the visit of the former President of the Philippines, Ferdinand E. Marcos and Major Manzano to Oroquieta. That time, the Commanding General of Mindanao was the late Col Wendell Fertig.

Oroquieta was created a City under R.A. 5518 and inaugurated as a chartered city on January 1, 1970. The charter converting the municipality of Oroquieta into a city are signed by President Marcos on June 25, 1969 in the presence of the then City Mayor, the late Ciriaco C. Pastrano, with the newly elected councilors and other city officials.

Oroquieta City is and will always be the home of hospitable and peace loving people.

Effect of Media/Technology in Todays Value System

First i will define media as television and technology as 21st gadgetry. In reality, today's technology affects every value of humanity. Sometimes they used it as mechanism to express what they wanted to express. Sometimes it may lead to destruction and create violent instruction.
We cannot deny the fact that today's technologies greatly affect today's value system. Nowadays, many companies race to product the latest high definition television . I sighted to as one of the forms of media which undeniable influences us specially to students like myself. This image producing machine is two sided. It has a good and bad effect to us. Let me start stating its negative effect. One of those is that, it holds me stay watching it without noticing how much time i wasted just sitting in front of this thing. Second is that, some of the scenes in it makes me curios and do it personally without thinking that it might harm not only me but also the people around me. talking about the negative side it does in my value system, it molds me into a person who i don't wanted to be. But i am not general saying that all that can wanted in a television does have the same effect on me. it has also positive effect on me. First is that television feature many movies that lets me be knowledgeable to the current happenings in this planet. It also adds the information about so many things which i can use probably in the near future. With respect to my value system. TV's lets me realize that what i am currently doing is wrong and through it. I can correct the manners that is to be change. Technology like cellphones also are responsible in the transformation and evolution of my attitudes toward life. i don't say that this media technology thins should be diminished in this world. its up to us people on how we handle it. Enjoy using the gadgets but do not let it invade you. live to the fullest. Do not change. be always who you are.

"Life of Jerome in Battle"

I consider him as a best friend. He was our class valedictorian in our elementary years. He was so smart that is why i look up to him. This man, full of courage is doing all his best in school for someday their family will experience life happily without worrying what they will eat in every day of their lives.
Remembering those days when they don't have anything to eat. This friend of mine goes to school with empty stomach. Lucky for him that we have have a garden at the back of our room which we planted ourselves. Those are eggplants and "petchay".He goes home with this vegetable just for them to have a lunch. He really experience hard at his early age. But he did not let poverty discourage him. Earning good grades and excellence in the field of learning. He tops in our school that time. "Where will i go after graduating elementary?"is what he said to me during our practice for the commencement exercise because we are graduating students already.
Looking at his face when he heard that he passed the scholarship exam for highschool at Cebu city is an amazing scene for me. After graduation, i only heard about him when he got home in our place from cebu and was shocked that his a new man. He teaches Godly lessons but he is not a teacher. It was just an activity from his school to thought students from the elementary school we,ve graduated.Very happy to see him doing those things, I asked him so many questions on th e changes that happened in his life. Good to know that he is still the friend who is humble and kind,Jerome and I were third year high school students at this certain time.
The smart man was even more happy when he got his scholarship for college because iof his excellence. As his friend, I am proud and very happy for him because I know his one step closer to his dream.
I hope that you were inspired of Jerome's story.I chose his story because i know I can tell everything because I know this man a lot.I can't forget what he said in vinacular language"Ang tawo maski dili bright og dato basta maningkamot lang, mu-asenso gyud".So let us all aim high and achieve success. Think Positively always!!!

Filipino students bagged an Award."BE PROUD"

Filipino students won at the recently concluded FedEx Express/Junior Achievement International Trade Challenge (ITC) regional finals in Singapore, a three-day competition designed to educate and build entrepreneurship and business skills in young people from Asia-Pacific.

Germaine Kaw and Sharmaine Yap, who represented the Philippines at the regional competition, bagged third place with their outstanding and innovative business idea in response to this year’s challenge.

Competing among 23 other teams from 7 other Asian countries, Kaw and Yap designed a vuvuzela MP4 music player as their market entry strategy for exporting vuvuzelas, a horn, to South Africa.

Meantime, Anchisa Pongmanaruth and Natharee Krabuantat of Thailand won the top prize with their ‘Vuvuseika’, a vuvuzela made from bamboo that can produce sounds of different musical notes with adjustable volume, targeting tourists and sports fans in South Africa.

The second place went to the team from Malaysia represented by Thiruvinothini Thiruvenggadarr and Sofea A. Ghani. They created a vuvuzela travel kit for tourists in South Africa. Named ‘Avontuur’, which means adventure in Dutch, the vuvuzela is a musical instrument that also functions as a telescope.

This year, forty-six students between 16-19 years of age from Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand were selected to represent their markets at the regional finals in Singapore after competing at the local challenge in their respective home markets.

Jointly organized by FedEx Express and U.S.-based JA Worldwide®, the world’s largest organisation dedicated to preparing youths for the working world, the ITC was launched in 2007 and is supported by a US$1.2million grant from FedEx Express over a four-year period involving major markets in the Asia Pacific region.

The panel of judges comprising successful entrepreneurs and esteemed business leaders evaluated the teams on their business acumen, concept and presentation. The students were measured on their thoroughness, creativity and professionalism in developing and executing their business entry strategy.

“We are very impressed with the quality of the market entry strategies presented this year. The finalists displayed tremendous ingenuity, creativity, teamwork and communication skills. We hope that this experience will help these students prepare for the challenges of the business world in the future,” said Clifton Chua, Managing Director, FedEx Express Singapore.

Sean C. Rush, president and chief executive officer of JA Worldwide, added, “These students epitomize how the next generation of business leaders will collaborate to solve problems and create value for their organizations. JA Worldwide is proud to partner with FedEx to create access for students to experiences like the ITC where they can apply entrepreneurial thought and action.”

Now in its fourth year, the ITC has provided more than 4300 students in Asia Pacific a firsthand experience of world trade; enhanced their knowledge of product distribution, promotion, and sales; and developed traits of competition, teamwork, risk-taking, and self-confidence. FedEx employees volunteered as mentors or to help students understand the concept of international trade and guide them in the development of their plans.

So To all Filipino's,let us be proud of our country because we have a say in being the best and always be best.

Carpenter's Wise Action

I am really impressed with what the carpenter has done to save two people from their relationship as brothers.Honestly, it is easy to break a relationship but putting them back together again is such a very hard task.
Someday, i would like to experience what the carpenter has done. It is such an amazing ability. I have always been trying to save relationship but i usually failed because i respect both parties. When they tell me not to enter in their argument, I respect that. Their is such a feeling inside me that tells me to fix and eventually get them back together as friends again.
What happened to the story is common today.Like for example when siblings fight for the lot they inherited from their parents. During fight, they usually say line"forget that you still have a brother/sister".
I hope in our future generation, there will be people like the carpenter. Maybe it is not like what the carpenter did but in their own and humanely way. I am looking forward in meeting people who has the ming and heart of the "CARPENTER"

The difference Between the Impossible and Possible lies in a Person's Determination

There is a great difference between the impossible and possible base upon a person's determination. They say that what is brain if a person doesn't have self-determination.One example is that, if that certain brainy person plans to develop something, it just do not make sense and his plans will just go to waste if he is not determined to even start or finishing it. If we base the example to the given statement, we can clearly see the difference that it is possible to achieve something with determination and that it is impossible without the determination of a person to achieve something .

Having a positive outlook in life will make a huge difference in life and it also increases chance of achieving impossible things into possible but it varies according to the person's abilities or his/her capacity. Some people are pessimistic. They usually suffer from an intellectual despair when they do not have faith in God,the courage and determination to themselves. The only solution is to be optimistic and be always determined to pursue the things you want to do and believe that God is in your side.
Practically speaking, all possible can be impossible but all impossible can't be all possible. One key factor in making possible from impossible is determination.
